Our Roots
The roots of Dan & Jerry’s Greenhouses trace back to a small truck farm in what was once rural Eden Prairie, where Dan Totushek and his father, Dan Sr., grew vegetables and sold them at the Minneapolis Farmers Market. As the business grew, they realized it would be more cost-effective to grow their own seedlings, which led them to build their first greenhouse. This venture was so successful that they expanded, adding more greenhouses and eventually diversifying into bedding plants. During this time, Jerry Quaal moved to Eden Prairie, and through their involvement in 4-H, he and Dan quickly became fast friends. Their shared interests and passion for farming led to the formation of a three-way partnership with Dan Sr. By the time they were sixteen, the boys were already working side by side, learning the ins and outs of the greenhouse business.
After Dan enlisted in the Air Force, Jerry and Dan Sr. continued to grow the business, focusing more on the bedding plant industry. Upon Dan’s return from military service, he and Jerry solidified the partnership that would shape Dan & Jerry’s Greenhouses into the thriving business it is today. In 1979, with rising taxes in Eden Prairie, they relocated the operation to Buffalo, MN, where they began with 60,000 square feet of greenhouse space. Over the years, they expanded further, shifting to hot house tomato production before ultimately focusing on bedding plants. Today, with greenhouses in Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, Michigan, and Missouri, we operate over 3.7 million square feet of greenhouse space—an impressive growth story that began from humble roots.
